In-Floor Heating
In-floor heating, also called radiant floor heating, refers to a type of heating system that warms an entire room via the floor. Heat gets evenly distributed via either a hydronic system that uses water or an electric system. Tubes are placed between the floor for a hydronic system, while electric cables are placed for an electric system. Electric works better for singular rooms, while hydronic is ideal for heating larger areas and is more efficient. Montana is known for its cold and snowy winters, making flooring systems like these ideal for residents of Southwest Montana.
Types of hydronic heating
Radiant in-floor heating and baseboard heaters are two of the most commonly used types. They each have their benefits and drawbacks, making it necessary to consider each before you decide which version to utilize inside your home.
Radiant in-floor heating
Radiant in-floor heating operates using a boiler, plastic pipes that carry the heated water, manifolds that distribute the water to different zones in the house, and zone valves that allow you to control where the water goes. This type of system is favored for its even heat distribution and energy efficiency. It ensures enhanced comfort and less maintenance. However, the installation process is more complex, and it may not be suitable for all floor types, such as thick carpeting. This is a great option for a new build, however is not recommended for older homes.
Baseboard heaters
Baseboard heating uses a boiler to heat the water. The water is then circulated through tubes or pipes located in the baseboard unit. You can use a thermostat to control the temperature. Zone valves can be used to allow different areas to be controlled separately. This type is easy to install and more affordable to do so. This is recommended for most existing homes.
